June 8 – Psalm 34

Blessed are you who take refuge in God!

What verse stood out to you today? For me, it was verse 8, “Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good! Blessed is the man who takes refuge in Him!” I love the phrase, “take refuge in Him.” When I think about taking refuge, I think about a storm, disaster, and finding rest. I would seek refuge where I know there is protection, safety, provision, warmth, comfort, and peace. I wouldn’t seek refuge somewhere that isn’t so. If that were the case, I would be seeking shelter. Something temporary that is better than nothing, the bare minimum for survival.

Does God shelter? Of course! He shelters us under His wings! (Psalms 91:4-6). And His shelter is the palace of all shelters, for He never does the bare minimum! When we seek refuge in God, we are telling Him that we know for certain that He is our place of safety, our provision, our warmth, our protection, our peace, and our comfort. We know Him and understand who He is as
much as possible in our human state.

We are not just blessed because we seek refuge in Him. We are blessed because we know why He is our refuge. We acknowledge His greatness and our deep need for Him, that we cannot go it without Him. We are blessed because our relationship with Him is one of praise, respect, and honor. We know our place in relation to Him.

If we struggle to recognize that He is our refuge, don’t worry! For David tells us how in verses 1, 3, and 4! When we constantly focus on Him, we are always within His refuge; we are already there. It is not some far off place; it is right where we are. In our moments of praising Him, we are within His refuge. The moment we bless His great name, we are in His refuge. The moment we experience and understand Him, we are in His refuge. Lost, scared, sorrowful? Bless His name!

My Verse: “Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good! Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him!” Psalm 34:8

My Response: My God, my God. How I have fallen before you as you have sheltered me under Your wings. I have found refuge in your presence time and time again. You are so faithful!!
