Introduction
Whatsoever He Saith Unto You, Do It
After doing the study Sharon wrote on the book of Hebrews last year, I considered what I may want to explore next and possibly write about. I was inspired by the first two verses of the book that declare: God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds. Hebrews 1:1-2
The writer of Hebrews urges his hearers to pay attention to Jesus. He makes his case through the entire book that Jesus is superior to anything they practiced or had been taught. The book urges these early believers to persevere as they learned new ways unfamiliar to them. It urges them to hold fast in the faith, to resist the temptation to fall back into Judaism, and to endure persecution by giving them examples of those who lived by faith. It is full of encouragement that Jesus is far above everything and everyone and is lifted up in heaven pleading with the Father on their behalf. There are also stark warnings about ignoring Him.
This being said, it seems fitting that we should pay attention to what God’s Son, Jesus, spoke while He was here, since this is what the writer of Hebrews tells us to do immediately. Jesus’ words are conveniently highlighted in some editions of the Bible so that they stand apart from the rest of scripture. This is not saying that the other words in the Bible are not important. Every word is God-breathed and important for our instruction and growth (2 Timothy 3:16).
Peter, James and John heard the voice of God when they saw Jesus transfigured to His glorious state. While He yet spake, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them: and behold a voice out of the cloud, which said, this is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye Him. (Matthew 17:5). We need to do the same and listen to what He says.
There are so many of Jesus’ words recorded in Scripture that I found it difficult to narrow them down to a three or four week study. As I reflected on the very words that Jesus spoke to His disciples and the multitudes and the same words that apply to us today, I attempted to focus on a few key points during His earthly ministry.
This study includes lessons for Monday through Saturday. I would like to suggest that on Sundays, you, as participants would choose something Jesus said that speaks to you personally.
Because I chose to use the Old King James version for this study’s references, the words may seem unfamiliar for readers of modern-day translations. I hope you don’t mind! I am so thankful for the easy-to-understand versions available now but thought I would take a step back to my childhood when the King James was the only version readily available. If something makes no sense in the KJV, I’ll use another version.
I look forward to hearing how the words of our Savior, Jesus Christ, speak to all of the ladies who choose to join this study. Instead of recording my verse and response ahead of time, I plan to participate each day along with you. My prayer is that each one of you will be comforted by the words of Jesus and encouraged in your faith to do what He says to do.
Blessings,
Sue Ricedorf
