June 7 – Psalm 33

Blessed are you nation of God’s people who keep Him as head. Blessed are you whom He has chosen to inherit all that He bestows upon us!

What does this mean, a “nation of God’s people who keep Him as head?” In Old Testament times, it referred to Israel, God’s people chosen to show His light to the world. Now that we as Gentiles have been grafted into God’s people, it’s a charge to stay loyal to God Himself and it’s a look ahead to the time when Jesus will reign! No earthly country or kingdom has ever succeeded in keeping God as head. It’s impossible, because humans have free will, and many will sadly reject God and His ways. Taken out of context, this blessing has been used to justify intentions, actions, and ideology throughout the ages. It shows how easily the Word of God can be misused and misrepresented.

We are called to called to be followers of God. We are called to live our lives according to His will, His purpose, and His design. This is a good reminder to not take God’s word out of context. We are to go before Him in prayer before diving into His Word. Why? To ensure we are in step with Him. One of our pastors long ago once explained it like this: satan is not afraid of time ‘with’ God, which is not first prefaced with prayer. If we are not in communication with Him from the start, if we are not inviting Him into our space, satan looooves that. Why? Because he can get in there and make a mess of everything.

This beautiful Psalm exclaims God’s sovereignty from creation through history. (If you want to learn more about steadfast love, check out Sharon’s Steadfast Love study!)

What is the nation referred to in this Psalm? A country? No. The United States of America? No. A people. We are to be a nation, a people of God, who shout for joy in the Lord, praising Him, offering thanksgiving, and singing to Him. Our devotion is to be to God and God only. God first. Blessed are you who keep God first and foremost. Blessed are you who fearfully submit to He who is all powerful.

My Verse: “Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord, the people whom he has chosen as his heritage!” Psalm 33:12

My Response: This nation of chosen people, that is me! For I am a Gentile and adopted into His Chosen Nation. I am to be as steadfast as He tells me to be. And why shouldn’t I be? For HE is steadfast, thus so shall I prayerfully be! Lord, give them a heart, mind, and spirit that is steadfast in my faith and love of You. Grant me a desire so strong for You that I will not falter. And hold fast to me when I do inevitably falter.

My verse: Psalm 33:6 “The LORD merely spoke, and the heavens were created. He breathed the word, and all the stars were born.”

My response: How can we not praise You, Lord God? Everything that exists is because You spoke it into being. Thank You for the blessing of life in this beautiful, vast world of stars, planets, tiny purple violets and busy ants. All of it under Your command …
