“So teach us to count our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.” —Psalm 90:12 NLT
Moment by moment I’m kept in his love,
Moment by moment I’ve life from above;
Looking to Jesus till glory doth shine;
Moment by moment, O Lord, I am thine.
(Written by Daniel Webster Whittle)
This lovely hymn expresses so much of what I feel and believe. I am singing it in my heart as I write.
What does a “moment” mean? A very short period of time. How often we use this word to mean a delay of some kind: “Just a moment, I’ll be right with you.” “Give me a moment to think about it.” But I’d like to reflect on some of the special moments in our lives—moments of joy or surprise and moments of sadness. Let’s start with joy.
Moments of Joy
I remember so many joyful moments, like the moment I believed in Jesus as my Savior. The moments when each of our four children believed. And hundreds of little moments of joy, like holding my newborn babies, becoming grandparents, and great-grandparents. I am thankful for 70 years of life with my Ray. I think of special times with family and friends, singing my favorite hymns, watching the beauty of falling snow, walking with Ray, watching the birds at the feeder, and the vivid green of new Spring, as well as the colorful leaves on the trees. It would take a book to record every moment of joy.
Moments of Sorrow
Times of receiving the news of a beloved family member who has died. Sadness in our hearts when we have caused unhappiness for someone else. Sadness in our fears.
I have a vivid memory of being five years old and seeing the fear on my mother’s face when she heard the news: “We are at war with Germany.” We lived in England, and at that age, I didn’t understand what war meant, but that moment is clearly in my mind. I could see the shock and sadness on her face. My parents had lived through the First World War. My dad had lost his brother in that war, and they feared this one would be worse and much more dangerous because of the advances in technology. It was truly a moment of fear and sorrow.
Moments with Jesus
Quiet times of prayer and praising Him at church, as we sing those glorious hymns, all those voices affirming our faith in song, thankful for all the love we share as Christians. He gives us precious moments when we feel His love and presence with us. Again, I will always remember the special moments when our children came to believe in Jesus and committed their lives to Him. So…
Take each moment and live each moment in peace eternally.
Let there be peace on earth, and let it begin with me.
(from “Let There Be Peace on Earth,” written by Jill Jackson and Sy Miller)
Thank You, Lord, for Your presence and love in the sad moments. May we treasure all the beautiful moments and create special moments for others, sharing love and kindness.
