Let your roots grow down into him, and let your lives be built on him. Then your faith will grow strong in the truth you were taught, and you will overflow with thankfulness.
—Colossians 2:7
Graduation season is upon us! Ceremonies, parties, balloons, and signs in front yards. Celebrations marking the end of one season of life and the beginning of the next. It’s an exciting time, but a little bittersweet, too.
Our oldest son, Carter, will graduate from high school next year, and I’m already feeling sentimental. I look forward to seeing what God has in store for him, but I know we’ll never have as much time with him as we do now. These growing-up years are precious, and, to his chagrin, I have thousands of photos to prove it!
As I anticipate the coming season, I think of some important verses from God’s Word that I want to share with Carter over the next year before he leaves for college. My hope is that when he reads these scriptures, they’ll encourage, guide, and remind him of God’s best plan for his life. Most of them he already knows by heart. I’m so grateful for the discipline he’s developed over the years to spend time with the Lord and in His Word. That discipline will be his guiding light as he leaves home.

I would love to share some of these scriptures with you. Perhaps you can use them in a graduation card this year or to encourage someone at a pivotal moment in their life. Above all, may you be personally challenged and encouraged by God’s Word today.
Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take. — Proverbs 3:5-6 (All of chapter 3 is great for a graduate!)
We can make our plans, but the Lord determines our steps. —Proverbs 16:9
God blesses you when people mock you and persecute you and lie about you and say all sorts of evil things against you because you are my followers. Be happy about it! Be very glad! For a great reward awaits you in heaven. —Matthew 5:11-12a
And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them. —Romans 8:28
Work willingly at whatever you do, as though you were working for the Lord rather than people. Remember that the Lord will give you an inheritance as your reward, and that the Master you are serving is Christ. —Colossians 3:23-24
Run from anything that stimulates youthful lusts. Instead, pursue righteous living, faithfulness, love, and peace. Enjoy the companionship of those who call on the Lord with pure hearts. —2 Timothy 2:22
I have not stopped thanking God for you. I pray for you constantly, asking God, the glorious Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, to give you spiritual wisdom and insight so that you might grow in your knowledge of God. —Ephesians 1:16-17
Reading these wonderful verses, one after another, makes me want to raise my hands and say, “Amen!” We couldn’t say it better!
The world and the flesh and the enemy are working overtime to convince our young people that obedience to God isn’t important and that their lives aren’t precious to Him. Let’s train them to use God’s Word as a weapon and speak truth against the enemy’s lies. Let’s cover our teenagers in prayer and lead them by holy example. May they be victorious and live lives that honor the Lord.
If you have favorite verses for a graduate, I’d love for you to share them in the comments! Let’s speak life over our loved ones, the life of God’s perfect words, especially in life’s big moments. May these scriptures be a blessing to you and yours.
Father, thank You for Your Holy Word! It is the light by which we see. May graduates be challenged, encouraged, and comforted by Your words. May they understand the riches of Your love and trust You more deeply as they begin the next season of their lives. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
All verses are from the New Living Translation
