Shhh—Don’t Say Anything Yet!

Musings

Now as they came down from the mountain, He commanded them that they should tell no one the things they had seen, till the Son of Man had risen from the dead. So they kept this word to themselves, questioning what the rising from the dead meant. —Mark 9:9-10

A dear friend enlisted my help in anonymously giving her beautiful, handmade creations to those who could use a little extra TLC. It has been really fun, but oh, it has been sooooo hard to keep the secret!!

All of us have had a hard time at some point keeping mum, especially when it’s either really, really good news or really, really hard news. We’re either bursting with excitement and can hardly contain ourselves, or we’re heartbroken and burdened to the core. Either way, we keep it hidden, but it takes everything we have until we are freed to share.

Sometimes God presses something on our heart or gives us a special insight into His Word or a situation that really ministers to us. But to others, it wouldn’t mean so much, or it just wouldn’t be the right time to share. For some, they will never grasp or understand in any fashion, and at best, would most likely only misunderstand. At worst, they might shut us out. So in those times, we, like Mary, simply ponder those special revealed secrets in our hearts until it’s the right time and place to share.

This is exactly where Peter, James, and John found themselves. They had just experienced the glorious Transfiguration, and now they were told to zip their lips?! They couldn’t even talk about it with the other disciples. That would have been a difficult task, especially since they came down from the mountain changed men. That change could not possibly have been unnoticed nor unasked about. What would they say? They also probably concluded very quickly that it would be to their advantage not to say anything anyway, especially to those not in their group. Who on earth would ever believe them? Besides, it would add fuel to an already igniting fire amidst the Jewish leaders against their Rabbi. But oh, how hard it must have been! And what about the other disciples? They had to have been wondering just what it was that the other three now knew that they didn’t. Why wasn’t Jesus telling them, too? They loved Jesus. They were close to Him (well, all but one). So, what was with the secrecy?

This was not the first time Jesus had said not to tell anyone what they had experienced. Nor would it be the last.

Take a look at what the Scriptures say about some of God’s secrets:

God owns secrets. The secret things belong to the LORD our God. —Deuteronomy 29:29a

God shares His secrets with us. The secret of the LORD is with those who fear Him, and He will show them His covenant. —Psalm 25:14

God made us in secret. My frame was not hidden from You, When I was made in secret, And skillfully wrought in the lowest parts of the earth. —Psalm139:15

God keeps our days a secret. Your eyes saw my substance, being yet unformed. And in Your book they all were written, The days fashioned for me, When as yet there were none of them. —Psalm 139:16

God keeps life in Heaven a secret until He’s ready to reveal it. But as it is written: “Eye has not seen, or ear heard, Nor have entered into the heart of man The things which God has prepared for those who love Him.” But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God. —1 Corinthians 2:9-10

God keeps the time of His return a secret. “But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, but My Father only.” —Matthew 24:36

In our walk with the Lord, there are things about Him, or about our future, or aspects of our daily life that we don’t grasp, understand, or know which way to turn. In this present unknown, it’s hard not to ask God why He can’t tell us. But, in His time, He will! Until that time, we need to continue simply, patiently seeking and following Him one step at a time. When the time is right, He will reveal the hidden to us.

One thing God will never keep hidden from those who are His: the way to Him! “And where I go you know, and the way you know. … I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” —John 14:4,6

Thank You, Father, for making Yourself known to me and for saving me. I love You, Lord!

In Him,
