Surprise! No, there’s no mistake here despite the fact that our Bible Study will focus on the New Testament book of Hebrews. In order to understand the Hebrews who initially read this letter, we need to have a refresher course in God’s dealings with His people from the very beginning, when He called them out of Egypt. The Song of Moses is an amazing summary of God’s love for His people, and (sadly) their stubbornness toward Him. As we are reminded of Who God Is once again in this incredible song written by Moses at the end of his life, we’ll be equipped to read Hebrews with fresh eyes.

In this first section of the song, we see the trend. “But Israel soon became fat and unruly; the people grew heavy, plump, and stuffed! Then they abandoned the God who had made them; they made light of the Rock of their salvation.” (vs 15 NLT) Right here is a warning we will see again in Hebrews. We start out in awe of God and His miracles, but we can so easily grow complacent. We forget our first love – God Himself. Oh, may this not be so for you and me! All our lives until Jesus calls us Home … let’s keep our eyes fixed on Him and what matters to Him!

My verse: Deuteronomy 32:18, “You neglected the Rock who fathered you; you forgot the God who had given you birth.”

My response: Such sad words! So typical of children, who assume that the care parents give them is their due, instead of being grateful for the labors parents expend to love them. Lord, help me to be grateful for my earthly parents and even more grateful to You, who birthed my soul and gave me the breath of life …

  • vs 4 “He is the Rock, his works are perfect, and all his ways are just.”

Lord, you are my Rock. You will always provide because you are good and just. You are perfect Lord – may all of my desires align with your will. May I never take you for granted.

    • Amen! Oh, how good life would be, if all our desires could be aligned with His perfect will. A beautiful prayer. Thank you.

Dear Father, thank you for this image of the eagle, which you have provided throughout the Bible. I love the vision of the power, the strength, and the spread of the eagle’s wings. I praise You for the majesty of the spread, the covering of the wings…yet the control not to harm the protected. Thank you, Abba Father, for your protection and faithfulness.

  • Deuteronomy 32:3 “For I will proclaim the LORD’S name. Declare the greatness of our God!”

My response: Outside of church, I almost never hear anyone proclaiming the Lord’s name or declaring His greatness. The quickest way for the world to forget God is for the world to not hear of Him; what He’s done, what He’s doing in people’s lives or about His nature. What I speak is surely part of how I act. If how I act is part of my repayment to the Lord, I need to speak of His greatness daily to everyone I encounter at work or wherever I am, not just to church friends and family. Remind the world of the true God they need in their lives. I am part of the reason the world will forget Him or I am part of the reason the world will remember Him.

    • Sobering and challenging words for us today. Thank you. Yes! Lord, give us wisdom and courage to know how to point people toward You, their Rock and their Savior, waiting for them to come.
