Musings

Until the day in which He was taken up, after He through the Holy Spirit had given commandments to the apostles whom He had chosen, to whom He also presented Himself alive after His suffering by many infallible proofs, being seen by them during forty days and speaking of the things retaining to the kingdom of God.
—Acts 1:2-3 (NKJV)

“That’ll be the day!” “When pigs fly!” “I’ll believe it when I see it!” All phrases we say because we don’t believe it, whatever the “it” thing is. We doubt, and we disbelieve because what we question seems just too impossible to ever be. Or maybe we’ve been let down and disappointed too many times. Whatever the reason and whatever the thing, we all experience times of doubt and disbelief and a downright “That cannot be.”

One of the many awesome things about God is that He understands the human heart like no one else can. He knows that, from time to time, we will need “proofs.”

Don’t you just love that word “proofs”? The Greek word means facts. God did not instruct Luke to write about theories, conjectures, assumptions, or personal opinions. He told him to write facts—facts that are inarguable.

What did God do? God came in the flesh. He died a crucifixion death. He tore the Temple veil without using His hands. He brought an earthquake and darkness without uttering a word. He forgave from the cross and changed the heart of a guard standing at its foot. He willingly gave up His last breath. He was buried and sealed in a tomb and busted through it alive. He opened the graves of over 500 saints who took a walk about town. He showed Himself alive to over 500 people in various places and to His disciples. He ate with them and talked with them and sat with them for forty days. Alive. Not dead. Alive!

This would be the hardest thing any human would ever have to believe, especially those who saw Jesus die on the cross, those who prepared His dead body, and those who placed His dead body in the cold tomb. Isn’t that understandable? I mean, if after my son died and after we had spread his ashes, people came to me and said that they saw him alive and that they’d had lunch with him, would I believe? Not on your life! But I sure would be checking it out. So God gave proof, hard evidence that He is who He says He is, and He did what He said He would do, and He keeps doing what He says He will do.

Do you have doubts? Maybe it’s life plans you’re not sure of. Maybe it’s a job decision or a family decision you’ve either made or are contemplating, but you’re just not sure. You need proof. Ask God and commit your plans to Him. He will direct your steps.

Maybe it’s your salvation. Is it real? Did I really give my life to God, or was it just the emotion of the moment? Look back at the proof. Remember the moment. Think over your changed life. Read His promise that He saves you and never stops the work He began. Can He really save me after all I’ve done and not done? Try Him and see. He promises that whoever comes, He will by no means turn away (see John 6:37).

Thank You, God, for loving us and for saving us. Thank You for understanding our thoughts from afar and remembering that we are but dust. Thank You for the proofs You give our doubting hearts so that we might know without a doubt. I love You, Lord!

He’s alive, He’s alive,
He’s alive and I’m forgiven,
Heaven’s gates are open wide.
He’s alive!
