Prayer as a Conversation with God

Request: Lord, open my eyes as I read your word, my ears to hear, my mind to understand, and my heart to be filled with your love.

Respond with a prayer to God.

The book of Habakkuk is a conversation between God and Habakkuk. Habakkuk complains, God responds. Habakkuk was struggling with the evil all around him. He could not understand how God would allow it. He boldly took his complaints directly and confidently to God. Chapter 3 is Habakkuk’s prayer of triumph and praise to God. Evil will not rule forever! We can completely trust in God and….. We need to be patient. Habakkuk lived by faithfulness to God every day – his joy came to him by his faithfulness. Verse 17 tells of the times of starvation, yet Habakkuk rejoiced in the Lord.

Habakkuk, the prophet of long ago, and Mary, the mother of our Lord, both praise God for their Savior. In verse 18, Habakkuk’s joy is in the “God of my salvation.” In Mary’s song, she says, “my spirit rejoices in God my Savior” (Luke 1:46-47). Habakkuk is full of joy from hearing and trusting in the promise of salvation. Mary is full of joy after hearing the word of God’s promise and knowing he fulfilled his promise to Zechariah and Elizabeth.

We too can be full of joy knowing that if we love and are faithful to God, he will give us strength and will walk with us always! God is our Savior! Trust in God each day. He will overcome evil forever when he comes again!

My verse: Habakkuk 3:2, “Lord, I have heard of your fame; I stand in awe of your deeds, Lord. Repeat them in our day, in our time make them known; in wrath remember mercy.”

Habakkuk knew that God would discipline all of Judah. He not only accepted the discipline but also asked God for help and mercy. God continues to work in our lives to refocus us on being faithful to him.

My response: God, thank you for your love even when I am not putting you first in my life. When I am weak, I know that I need strength to change, refocus and be faithful to you. I ask that you will help and guide me when I lose faith in you. Amen.

  • “Even though the fig trees have no blossoms, and there are no grapes on the vines; even though the olive crop fails, and the fields lie empty and barren; even though the flocks die in the fields, and the cattle barns are empty, yet I will rejoice in the Lord! I will be joyful in the God of my salvation!” Vs 17-18

Even though…yet I will rejoice. God I pray that in the middle of the “even thoughs” of life I will rejoice in You and find my joy in You. My strength comes from You Lord, not my circumstances. Thank You!

    • Soooo challenging when there are no grapes on the vine. But oh what a relief to know that even then, God is near and victory will come someday. I cling to those truths with you!

  • My verse: Habakkuk 3:4 “His coming is as brilliant as the sunrise. Rays of light flash from his hands, where his awesome power is hidden.”

My response: Visions like this one, Lord, remind me of Your greatness and the joy that will be ours when You return and renew the earth, stamping out evil and bringing true peace. So. Even though times nowadays can be so hard … “I will rejoice in the LORD! I will be joyful in the God of my Salvation!” (vs 18)
