Well, dear ones, we are back to the customs of another culture, aren’t we? It’s still the same general principle we saw with Judah and Tamar. If a widow has no children, then the closest relative is duty-bound to marry her and give her a child to carry on the legacy of her first husband. If you have not read the story of Ruth before, and if you have time, I encourage you to read all four chapters to get the full picture. We only looked at Ruth and Boaz’s marriage, today, in chapter four. Here are my thoughts. I can’t wait to read yours!
My verse: Ruth 4:10 “And with the land I have acquired Ruth, the Moabite widow of Mahlon, to be my wife. This way she can have a son to carry on the family name of her dead husband and to inherit the family property here in his hometown. You are my witnesses today.”
Oh Father, how noble of Boaz to “do this right.” To care for Ruth and Naomi and provide a legal heir for their husband’s property! So strange to think this was the only way for a woman to be secure, though, in that time. So very different from today.
Thank You, too, for the joy in knowing that this was also a love match. Ruth (again, a bold woman with Naomi’s encouragement) declaring to Boaz that she’d like him to be the kinsman-redeemer and Boaz, humbled and thrilled to be asked!! I love these two.
