Musings

“But be not ye called Rabbi: for one is your Master, even Christ; and all ye are brethren.” —Matthew 23:8 KJV

When we lived in Kennebunk, Maine, we often went to the seashore in the evening. It was only a short distance, and we frequently walked or waded as the tide came in. Sometimes we just sat on beach chairs and watched. That was fun, too.

This was a time when dogs were allowed on the beach, very popular with dog owners! I remember watching one of the dogs chase the balls the owner threw as far as he could, even into the waves. The dog would chase them and bring them back to his master, hoping for more fun.

With so many people on the beach, how did he know where to go? Of course, he kept his eyes fixed on the master! It made me think about the dog’s absolute love and loyalty to his master, his desire to honor and serve him. What a perfect example of love and loyalty!

How well do we keep our “eyes on the Master”? How often do we choose our own way, pursuing what we want, instead of what the Lord desires for us?

During a period of deep personal tragedy for our family, my comfort came from time on my knees, sharing my thoughts and sadness with the Lord. I poured out my heart to Him, and I knew He cared. I kept “my eyes on the Master.”

Turn your eyes upon Jesus,
Look full in His wonderful face,
And the things of earth will grow strangely dim
In the light of His glory and grace.
—Hymn by Helen H. Lemmel

Lord, please help me always to love and serve You, to share You with others, to be gentle and kind, to draw others to the Savior. Help us all to keep our eyes on the Master.

I said to the LORD, “You are my Master!
Every good thing I have comes from you.”
—Psalm 16:2 NLT

Looking Unto Jesus has been my theme for this year – and the hymn – Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus – has all kinds of significance in my life and especially this year. Margaret, I particularly like the reminder that Jesus is the ‘master’ as well as author and finisher. Sweet photo – I can see the two of you in my mind’s eye in this poignant vignette. I am acquainted with another golden like this one, whose master threw the ball into the lake, and the dog bypassed the ball and kept swimming toward the loon !!!! He did hear his master’s voice but he had to turn around to see his master !!

Oh your story of a “not so obedient” golden made me laugh! Glad he did finally turn and see his master. Thanks so much for commenting.
